Bedugul Botanical Gardens: A Wonderful Day Trip
Kebun Raya Eka Karya, otherwise known as the Bedugul botanical Gardens, dates from 1959 and covers more than 150 ha of land in Bali’s Tabanan Regency. Boasting 1200 distinct types of plants, including 320 types of orchids from all over Indonesia as well as a rose garden, these gorgeous botanical gardens are a must-see if you’re anywhere near Bedugul. Remember that since you are at roughly 1,500 m this area is much cooler than the beach area from which you probably have traveled, and for this reason it’s much more enjoyable to wander around the grounds of the garden.
There are several hundred birch trees on the premises and many different varieties of flora from elsewhere in Asia, South America, Australia and Europe. You’ll also find 100 types of cactus from all over the world. Be sure and look for the traditional Balinese homes on the premises as well.
Naturally part of the attraction to Bedugul is getting a break from the heat of the lower regions in Bali, and you’ll also enjoy the drive up. Most visitors are surprised when they see how quickly the terrain changes north of Denpasar and the sudden shock of rice paddies so green that it almost makes your eyes hurt.
If you’re coming from the tourist enclaves down near Ngurah Rai International Airport, expect to pay roughly 400,000 rupiah for a car and a driver for the day. The asking price will start considerably higher; be prepared to bargain hard. Bedugul is easily visited in a day trip. Bedugul botanical gardens are open every day from seven o’clock in the morning till six o’clock at night. If you’re visiting Bali and you find that the party scene and nonstop shopping has got you down, get a little natural refreshment by including these wonderful gardens in your Bedugul, Bali travel itinerary.
